Leonard Charles Bramwell Butt - 88, of Kentville, passed away Saturday, January 8, 2011 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Indian Cove, New World Island, Newfoundland, he was a son of the late William and Carrie (Gosse) Butt. While in Newfoundland, he received his schooling in the United Church School. He worked at a number of jobs, including typesetter, compositor, school teacher, grocery and dry goods clerk. He managed Riff's Furniture and Appliances for a number of years in Windsor-Grand Falls. He later became owner, operator and president of Stephenville Furniture and Appliances. Leonard was a past secretary and chairman of the Salvation Army School Board in Windsor and vice chairman and chairman of the Integrated School Board for Grand Falls District. He was a founding member of the Grand Falls Kiwanis Club. He was also involved with the Gideons and the Salvation Army Men's Fellowship and for a number of years was a member of the Orangemen. He enjoyed fishing, reading, carpentry, boating, travelling, photography and wrestling. While in Kentville, he was involved with the Gideons and the 50-Plus Senior's Group. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, the former Eleanor Violet Jane Simmons; two sons, Ivar (Gladelle), New Minas; Leonard, Dartmouth; three brothers, Harris (June), Edmonton; Everett (Edna), Scarborough; Clyde (partner, Cathy), Toronto; four grandchildren; two great grandchildren; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Ruby Stuckey; two infant brothers. Visitation was held from 7-9 p.m. Monday, January 10, 2011 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 11, 2011, Majors Ross and Doreen Grandy and Pastor Robert Cross officiated. Burial took place in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill. Donations in memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or the charity of your choice.
