PICTOU - Courtney Sylvester Walker, 91, passed away January 16, 2011 in the Northumberland Veteran's Unit, Sutherland Harris Memorial Hospital, Pictou.
A son of Robert Hugh and Margaret Jane (Baird) Walker, Courtney grew up in Three Brooks and was a fisherman in his early years.
He was a veteran of World War II, having served in Newfoundland and Overseas, and as such was a longtime member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 16, Pictou. Some 20 years were spent in Guelph, Ontario, where he was employed as a mechanic. Courtney returned home to be with his mother in 1979. He was known as Mr. Fixit, skilled in carpentry, furniture refinishing, and engine repairs of all kinds.
Surviving are his daughter, Sandra (Ross) Gleason, two granddaughters, Carrie and Connie; great-granddaughter, Charlotte, all in Ontario; sister, Fern Sellers, Pictou; extended family: Tiye Doughty, Karen Watson, Shane Jeffery, Dr. Robert Cooper, Kenneth and Margaret MacDonald, Sharon Doughty, and David, Jenny and James Cameron.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by a brother, Herman.
Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou, from where funeral service will take place 2 p.m. Thursday, with Chaplain Michael Simmons officiating. Burial will be in Waterside Cemetery. A reception will follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Northumberland Veteran's Unit, Waterside Cemetery, or the S.P.C.A.
