It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Alex Bates, Monday, Jan. 17, 2011, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a brief illness.
Born in Bateston, he was the son of the late Austin and Alice (O'Neil) Bates.
Alex was a faithful member of Immaculate Conception parish, and an honorary member of the Bateston Athletic Club. He was a quadriplegic for 50 years after a car accident. Alex enjoyed life, spending time with family and listening to fiddle music and watching horseracing.
Alex is survived by his brother, Jim (Williamena) Bates; sisters, Marie White, Eileen Boutilier, all of Bateston, Susan MacDonald, North Sydney, Theresa MacDonald, Rita Bates, both of Sydney; sister-in-law, Iris Bates; brother-in-law, Tom Wilcox; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Alice Wilcox, brothers, Dave, John (Helen), Herman, Gerard and three siblings in infancy.
Visitation will take place Wednesday, Jan. 19 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, Main-a-Dieu. Funeral mass will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 20 in Immaculate Conception Church with Fr. Patrick O'Neill officiating. Interment to follow in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice.
