Bill passed away peacefully at home after a brief battle with cancer.
Bill is survived by his daughter Ellen Thompson, wife Allison McNevin, sisters Carolyn Thompson and Bernice Poitras, sister-in-law Ruby Thompson, and his nephews JC and Martin Thompson.
Bill was born in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. He arrived in the Yukon in 1972 and never left. He enjoyed his many friends and co-workers. He worked in the road construction industry for forty years. He enjoyed the landscape of the Yukon, camping and fishing. His biggest enjoyment came from having a family and watching his daughter, Ellen grow. During his illness her music gave him much joy.
The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to Dr. Danusia Kanachowski, who worked tirelessly to manage his pain and allow Bill his last wish to pass away at home with dignity and surrounded by his loved ones. It took a large team to deliver this request as we live outside of city limits. Thank you again for exceptional workers in the Palliative Program as well as home care, to Marqeriet the wonderful Palliative nurses, Brenda, Susan, Tracie, and Jan, these individuals are special people. Please forgive us if we forgot anyone. Your kindness will remain with our family for years. Kudos to the Yukon Government in their endeavor to deliver this program. The family would also like to thank Dr. Himmelsbach, Dr. Tadepalli, and the BC Cancer agency that also did their very best to assist Bill with his battle.
We have lived in the Fox Creek area for twenty years and through Bill's illness we have come to realize what a unique community we have. Thank you for all your support. We also would like to thank our employers dana Naye Ventures, who cooked us enough food for a month and supported us, and Kluane Drilling for their support and visits. The family would also like to thank all our friends and family who visited, cooked, picked up medications, groceries and visited us through this time. Thank you. Bill brought joy to all who knew him.
Celebration of Life will be held at the Westmark, Whitehorse on January 22, 2011 from 2 - 5 p.m. Bill's ashes will be placed in Bridgeville, Nova Scotia on February 12, 2011 with a Celebration of Life to follow. Place TBA.
In lieu of flowers, any donations would be greatly appreciated and will go towards resources for the Palliative Care Program and also a Rotary Scholarship for Senior Piano.
