LEWIS, Jeremiah "Jer" "Jerry" - unexpectedly passed away at home on January 1, 2011 after a lengthy battle with heart disease. Born in Bell Island, N.L. on July 20, 1940, he was the son of the late Albert and Annie (Reynolds) Lewis. He is survived by his children: Cordelia (Randy) Knowles, Jeremiah Jr. (Gabrielle) both in Ontario and Edward; eleven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was predeceased by his sisters Mary and Annie and a brother Patrick in infancy. Leaving to mourn are his five brothers: Kevin, Albert (Linda), Willie (Marg C.) all in Ontario, Raymond (Madeline) in Bell Island, N.L., Joseph (Ramona) in Nova Scotia; and his 3 sisters: Alice (Bob) O'Keefe in Nova Scotia, Margaret in Bell Island, N.L., Angela (Gord) Johnson in Bell Island, N.L. Jer was a member of the army cadets in his youth and later joined the Canadian Army. He owned and operated a convenience store and gas bar at one time. Singing and playing guitar were things Jer enjoyed very much as he had a great love of music - especially classic country. He will be fondly remembered as a very caring person that loved helping people whenever he could. He had a smile for everyone and never met a stranger. Although his life was centered on his family, he touched many lives with his smile and generous heart. Cremation has taken place and the ashes will be going "home" to Bell Island, N.L. to be buried in the family plot as Jer always had a special place in his heart for Bell Island -"Home Sweet Home." A celebration of Jer's life was held on Sunday, January 9, 2011 in 3 provinces (Ontario, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland) simultaneously through the use of Skype. A touching tribute was given by his daughter, Cordelia who read many memories from family and friends. After the tribute, we enjoyed sharing pictures and conversations with many family members throughout the country. Jer may be gone, but his memory will live on. Donations may be made in memory of Jer to The Heart & Stroke Foundation or a charity of your choice. Jer will be greatly missed by all that loved and knew him.
