It is with heavy hearts and deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, brother and friend, Gary MacLean, 52, on Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney Mines on Oct. 2, 1958, he was the son of the late Jimmy and Leona (Levionnois) MacLean.
He was a member of St. Joseph parish, Bras d'Or.
Gary spent his career as a great captain and fisherman on the Kelly n Jordan. Upon his retirement, he enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting and golfing with his family and friends.
Dad was always known for his laugh. He took great pride in spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was an amazing father and grandfather.
Dad will be sadly missed by his children, Lee (Chris), Point Aconi, Janice (Paul), Georges River, Gary (Alicia), Alberta, and Stacey, Ontario; granddaughter, Joanna, at home; grandchildren, Shannon, Katelyne, Sheighlyn, Leeland, Emilie Merica, Jessica and Jaidan, and the mother of his children, Elaine MacLean. Also left to mourn are his brothers, Joe (Carina), Leonard (Rosie), Bruce (Arlene), Brian (Paulette), Roy and Terry and his sister, Patsy; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides his parents, Gary was predeceased by his brothers, Gordie, Russell and Dougie, a sister in infancy and close friends, Darlene Hoeg, and Donnie and Angus Hinkley.
Thank you to the doctors and nurses of the palliative care unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. You are all angels to us for the compassionate care you gave to our Da and his family. Thank you to Susan MacKenzie, the palliative care doctors, and the VON for making it possible to keep our Dad at home for some time.
A special thank you to Dad's best friends Walter Hoeg, and his brother Joe.
Visitation for Gary MacLean will be held in the J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines, today (Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2011) from 7-9 p.m. The funeral mass will take place on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph Church, Bras d'Or, with Fr. Peter McLeod officiating. A reception will be held in the parish hall, following the service.
