On January 15, 2011 John Wesley Rathwell passed away peacefully at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon, after a long battle with cancer. He is sorely missed by his wife of 26 years Dianna (Debienne), sons John Wallace Rathwell of Regina, William Edwin (Cherie) Rathwell of Calgary, Marc Owen Rathwell of Oxbow, and Steven Coop of Red Deer, three granddaughters; Maisie, Taylor and Caitlin, and three grandsons Joshua, Alexander and William. Predeceased by his father and mother, John Garfield Rathwell and Isabella (Getty) Rathwell, four sisters Jeanne Helen Hart, Sarah Grace Ridley, Edith May Mellan, Ruth Isabella Phillips, his brother George Garfield Rathwell, and nephew Glen David Hart. He is survived by sister-in-law Pat Rathwell, nieces and nephews George Jr. (Shammi) Rathwell, Stuart (Dana) Rathwell, Carole Hutchinson (David), Leatha Bird (Garvin), Grant (Linda) Ridley, Eleanor Drurie (Bruce), Isabella Marquette, John (Sandy) Mellan, Archie (Denise) Mellan, Christine Mellan (Grant Thorpe), Clara Sinfield (Peter), Les (Jan) Hart, Don (Evette) Hart, and numerous cousins, great-nephews, and nieces. Wes was born on January 27, 1936, while the family lived in the Kindersley area, shortly after Wes' birth the family moved back to the Moose Jaw farm which was settled by his grandfather S.K. Rathwell in 1882. From there the family moved into Moose Jaw proper where Wes grew up. On June 19, 1953 Wes started working for CP Rail at the bottom and working himself through Fireman to Engineer until he made his last trip March 1, 1991. During his years on the railway he continued to farm and worked in BC as a logger and long-shore manon winter layoffs. He kept himself busy helping neighbours with minor demolitions, blasting and removing tree stumps, rocks, foundations, barns, houses, and other buildings. Wes followed his passion and learned to fly in 1958. Wes was a member of the Order of Elks,Wa-Wa Shrine, and Moose Jaw Shrine Club. He became Worthy Master in both the Moose Jaw Masonic Lodge #3 G. R. S. in 1975 and Hawarden Masonic Lodge #143 G.R.S. in 2010. After Wes retired he learned the art of stained glass and welding on something other than a tractor. He enjoyed swimming and lying in the sun in Sun City, AZ and when back in Canada his time was spent boating, fishing, and enjoying Lake Diefenbaker. Wes was also known to show up at Shrine events as part of the Oriental Band and later as Dazzle and always had a story to tell from his life experiences. Wes' wish was that we have an Irish wake in Moose Jaw when the weather is better for travel. Please remember Wes in your own way, and join the family in the spring before seeding.
