It is with great sadness and fond memories, we announce the passing of our loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt, Sandra (Smith) Whitty of Indian Brook, Victoria County on at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, Jan. 27, 2011, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer.
Born in West Tarbot, Victoria County, she was the daughter of the late Sarah Jane Buchanan and Donald John (DJ.) Smith, Indian Brook. She was a member of St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church, Baddeck.
She is survived by her loving husband of 31 years, Bert; daughter, Donna (Blair) Jessome and their son, Matthew (the pride and joy of her life) of Florence; son, Sheldon (Terri), of Gardiner Mines; granddaughter, Jessica MacDermid of North River; stepdaughter, Nena (Maxx) Whitty; stepgrandson, Blayne MacDonald; sisters, Christine (Duncan) MacEachern, North River, Murdena (Sandy) MacRae, Baddeck, Shirley Hefferon, Baddeck; sisters-in-law, Agnes (Tom) Donovan, Halifax, Lillian (Glen) Pepperdine, Enfield, Catherine (Basil) Favaro, P.E.l.; brothers-in-Iaw, Maurice (Violet) Whitty, lngonish, Joe (Edie) Whitty, Liverpool, Freeman (Flora-Ann) Whitty, Doug (Judy) Whitty, both of P.E.l. and sister-in-law, Catherine Smith, Indian Brook. She is also survived by her best friend, Joan MacInnis, and many nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her "aunt" Mae Smith, their "baby" Tiger; brother, Angus; mother-in-law, Gertrude Whitty; father-in-law, George Whitty; brothers-in-law, Dennis Whitty and Barry Whitty.
Over the past six years, Bert and Sandra, lived in Indian Brook, in their new dream home. This was the best six years of their lives. Also during this time period, Bert and Sandra travelled extensively, the highlight of their travels was travelling to Hawaii and going on a 10 day cruise.
The body is resting at the MacAskill Funeral Home, 43 Grant St., Baddeck with visitation hours from 4-8 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 31, 2011 at St. Pius X Church, Sydney Mines, with Fr. Paul Abbass officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetary.
