John "Jack" MacLean

Stellarton - John "Jack" C. MacLean, age 81, of Cambridge Ave, Stellarton, passed away Sunday January 30th , 2011 in the Aberdeen Hospital Palliative Care Unit surrounded by his family. Born in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia . He was the son of the late Bernard (Brick) MacLean and Margaret (Rose), raised in Rabbit Town and predeceased by his soul mate and love of his life, Mary Belle (Marcipont) of Stellarton.
Known as Red to friends and co-workers, his lifelong passion was fly-fishing for trout, paddling his canoe over the lakes and streams of Nova Scotia. As an avid outdoors person, he found everlasting and profound joy in exploring dirt roads, discovering forgotten orchards or casting a dry fly into the pools of Pinkytown, St Josephs Lake, Plaster Rock and Beaver Meadows. He served as a Stellarton Town Councilor for Ward Three, the Red Row and Lourdes. In mid-life he enjoyed annual family vacations at Lake Ainslie, Cape Breton Island. In later life he looked forward to fishing and hunting trips to the camp at Cross Lake with Babe, Gary and John, the best fishing buddies a man could ask for. An avid reader his entire life, a book on science or Nova Scotia's natural history was always within arm's reach.
He worked all his adult life for Canada Post, beginning his career as a mail sorter on the night train to Cape Breton and finishing as Post Master in Stellarton after 36 years of dedicated service where he relished greeting the residents of the town each day. Sharp minded to the end, he loved the challenge of helping with a tax return and 50 years after delivering his last letter, he could recall house street numbers from his deliver route. A member of the Heritage Club Canada Post since retiring in 1986, he was a volunteer for the Pictou -Antigonish Regional Library delivering books to shut-ins.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother uncle and true friend. Surviving are his sons, John (Wanda Butts) Stellarton; Laurie (Betty Kirk) Stellarton; Steven (Ivy Murray) MacLellans Brook; sisters, June Peterson, New Glasgow (formerly of Lantz); Margaret Forehart, Sackville; grandchildren, Kayla and Jonathan, Nicole (Justin Smith), Calgary, and Stacey (Ryan Surette) Calgary, Justin (Lisa Cole), Calgary, and Jessica; many wonderful sisters and brothers in-law, nieces and nephews.
The family will receive visitors Tuesday, February 1st, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at H.C. MacQuarrie Funeral Home, Stellarton with church service at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 2nd with Father Peter MacDonald officiating. Internment will be at Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery followed by Spring burial.
Donations in lieu of flowers may be made in Jack's memory to the Heart and Stoke Foundation of Nova Scotia, Canadian Diabetes Association and the Aberdeen Palliative Care Society.
