The family of the late Herbert Ignatius MacGillivary of South Bar, wish to announce his passing on Jan. 28, 2011, at Harbourstone Enhanced Care Facility where he received loving care for the past ten months.
'Herbie' was born June 17, 1930, to the late Herbert and Ella (White) MacGillivary and was a lifelong resident of South Bar.
Herbie was employed for 39 years with Sydney Steel Company, retiring from the electrical department in 1987. Having a very strong work ethic and being a "jack of all trades", he was always ready to lend a helping hand to his many friends and family, and to his church and community. After retirement he and Isabel loved to travel including many trips to Boston and Florida and he also enjoyed golfing with his friends at Seaview and Ingonish. He loved to dance and attended many Ceilidhs and Scottish festivals both near and far. Many an evening was spent around the table with family and friends enjoying a good game of cards and a cup of tea.
Herbie is survived by his wife of 55 years, Isabel (MacLellan); and his 10 children, Josephine, Calgary, Louise (Peter Chaffey), Dartmouth, Irene (Jim MacEachern), Sydney, Eileen (Bill Sarantos), Mansfield, MA, Genevieve (Donnie Richardson) South Bar, Joyce (Charlie MacDonald), Sydney, Terry (Jan), Sydney, Bill, Whistler, B.C., Rita (Steve Gauvin), Sydney, Vince (Tracy) Sydney. He is also survived by his 14 grandchildren, Kevin (Sarah), Elizabeth (Jarrett), John, Ryan, Angus, Will, Anna, Christopher, Corey, Rylea, Carter, Nicholas, Emma and Ben and by his great-granddaughter, Isabella. He is also survived by his siblings, Bill (Phyllis), Dartmouth, Connie (Greg) Boone, New Waterford, Sissy (Tom) Nearing, Guelph, Ont.
Besides his parents, Herbie was predeceased by siblings, Gregory, June, Bernadette (Bryden), Rita (Melnyk) and Genevieve 'Gennie' (Kinsella).
Visitation was held from 7-9 p.m. Sunday and will continue today from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, Feb. 1 at Holy Redeemer Church, Whitney Pier, with Fr. Paul MacGillivary officiating. Burial will take place at a later date at St. Alphonsus Cemetery, South Bar.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Society or the Cape Breton Regional Palliative Care Unit.
