It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Nelson Buchanan, on Jan. 29, 2011, at his home.
Born in Glace Bay, Nelson was the son of the late Harold and Pat (Grant) Buchanan.
He was a member of St. Luke's United Church, Donkin. Nelson was employed by the Sydney Steel Corporation, retiring after 29 years of service. He was an honorary member of the Donkin Volunteer Fire Department. Nelson thoroughly enjoyed his retirement, golfing, hunting and fishing. Mostly he enjoyed watching and attending hockey games with his wife, Donna. He was an avid Screaming Eagles fan.
Nelson is survived by his wife of 51 years, Donna (Currie); his five children, Lynn (Charles), Donkin, Deborah, Fredricton, N.B., Donnie (Terrie), New Glasgow, N.S., Donna Marie, Antigonish, N.S., and Wayne, Donkin; his grandchildren, Amanda, Adam, Nolan, Steffan, Alexandra, Riley and Travis. He is also survived by his brother, Kevin (Arlene) and their children, Kevin (Lee Ann and Emily), Craig (Carter) and Angie.
Nelson's life was made richer by the return of his brother, Kevin to Donkin after years of military service. He enjoyed his time spent with Kevin and Arlene at Dearn's Corner.
Nelson will be so sadly missed by his family and many friends.
Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Patten Funeral Home. Visitation will be held Tuesday, Feb. 1 from 6-9 p.m. at Patten Funeral Home, Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held in St. Luke's United Church, Donkin, Wednesday at 11 a.m. Rev. Chris Matheson officiating with reception to follow in the church hall. Burial at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Luke's United Church, Donkin.
