In 1951, at the age of 19 years he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force as an Air Communications Technician and was "Honorably Released" in 1956. During the years 1956-1970 he owned and operated Teulon's Service Ltd. (Esso Service Station) in Waldeck, SK. In 1970 he established his farming operation northwest of Waldeck. His son Mark operates the farm today, and Mel has been a retired farmer for many years. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #56 and a former member of the Waldeck Square Dance Club. In his younger years he was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed snowmobiling and boating. As he got older, he spent many years at his winter home in Weslaco, Texas, where he enjoyed shuffling, golf, playing cards and socializing. He loved to travel and has been all over North America, the Caribbean and to Europe a few times. Mel loved to chat and it was not uncommon for him to drive around the country side, pull into a farm yard and talk for hours. He was well read and could talk history, politics, farming or the weather! Mel was also very proud of his children and grandchildren and he had a soft spot for animals, expecially dogs. He was a regular visitor at the Palliser Regional Care Centre, where he would go and visit with residents for hours. No doubt his visits will be missed. Memorial donations in his memory to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #56 or to the Salvation Army, would be appreciated by the family. Warren's Funeral Home were entrusted with the arrangements.
