Gould, Victor Heckman - 89, passed away peacefully at Veteran's Place in Yarmouth on Friday, January 28, 2011, with family at his side. Born November 4, 1921, in Canaan, Yarmouth Co., he was a son of the late William and Beatrice (White) Gould. Dad was a veteran of the Second World War. He was a member of the Carleton York Regiment and he served from 1942 until 1946. During the war, he served in Canada, Africa, England and Italy. Dad told us that the doctor told him that he didn't have to serve, due to a problem he had with his foot, but he chose to serve because he said "somebody had to fight." Dad was injured and he was hospitalized in Italy for a few months. Over the years, Dad worked as a wholesaler for Terris Meats. He was also a truck driver for Thompson's and Sanborne's. He worked for a while at the Cotton Mill and later on in his life, worked in the woods selling firewood. Dad was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying deer hunting, rabbit hunting and fishing, until his eyesight and hearing got bad. Dad was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 155 Carleton for a number of years. He is survived by special friend, Seretha Fevens; daughters, Susan Gould and Brenda (Wayne) Smeltzer; stepdaughter, Evelyn (Milford) Hamilton; son, Bradley Gould; brothers, Bill (Sandra) Atkinson and Leroy Atkinson; sisters, Mildred Jonah (Tinkham); grandchildren, Helena and Edward; step-grandchildren, Sadie (Steve), Mary and Danny; step great-grandchildren, Blake, Morgan and Mya. He was predeceased by first wife, Mae; second wife, Evelena; stepson, Carman. Cremation has been entrusted to Sweeny's Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Yarmouth. Memorial service was held Wednesday, February 2 at 2 p.m. in Sweeny's Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. A. D. "Bill" Newell officiated. Interment will take place at a later date in Canaan Cemetery.
