Obituary for Martin Joseph Anderson - Upper Onslow, NS
It is with praise and with great thankfulness for his life that we, his family, announce that Martin Joseph Anderson went to be with the Lord on February 6, 2011. Martin was born in Truro, the only child of the late Esther Elizabeth Anderson, on August 5, 1924. Martin grew up in Truro and was a proud alumnus of Willow Street School. On turning eighteen he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, training as a navigator. He was stationed in Tofino, British Columbia where he flew in Catalina's over the Pacific Ocean. With the end of the war and his return to Truro he worked for Acadian Bus Lines, Electrical Distributors and Lantz Motors before spending the majority of his working years as Office Manager/Bookkeeper for Halverson and Smith Contractors. Martin enjoyed nature and spent many hours in the outdoors, - hunting, fishing, and camping with his family. He was involved with the Truro Curling Club, Truro Little League, Cobequid Twirlers Square Dance Club, Hub Trackers Square Dance Club, and the Waltz Away Round Dance Club. Martin was a lifelong member of Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church. He enjoyed building model airplanes, shopping, traveling to visit his grandchildren, and listening to his vast record collection. He was the man who put the "gentle" in gentleman.
Martin was predeceased by his first wife, Gladys Jean Maloney. He is survived by his second wife, Catherine Margaret Funge, to whom he was married for over thirty years; His son, Ken and daughter-in-law, Karen; daughter, Lori and son-in-law, Ken Pavey; his grandchildren, Tom and Samantha Anderson , Katelyn, Stephanie and Nick Pavey
The family wishes to thank Dr. Pugsley and the staff of Hilden Medical Clinic; Dr Henderson and Dawn Martell, RN of the Palliative Care Team; the VON nurses who helped so much; and the office staff of Earth Angels. Special thanks to Angels - Debbie, Emily, Tara, Chevie, Christie, Shane, Rebecca, Lisa, and Andrea. A special thank you to Roy and Sharon and to Ken and Sharon for your support and all our neighbours and friends.
Visitation will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 Wednesday and from where the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 26, Truro will conduct a Legion Tribute Service at 7 pm Wednesday in the Mattatall~Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro. Funeral service will take place on Thursday at 11 am in the Immaculate Conception Church, Truro with Father Ronald Cairns officiating. A reception will follow in Campbell Hall. Burial will take place at a later date in Bible Hill Cemetery, Bible Hill. In lieu of flowers, tributes to Martin would be appreciated and received by the Colchester SPCA or charity of choice.
