Hugh Alexander Campbell of 106 Grove St., Sydney, passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on Sunday, February 6, 2011.
Born in Sydney on February 17, 1928, he was the son of the late Duncan Joseph and Catherine (Mac Eachern) Campbell.
'Big Hughie's' athletic career began in the 1940's while a student at St. Mary's in Halifax. His hockey talents had taken him to many places throughout the Maritimes, eventually leading him to the United States where he turned pro in the American League. He lived many years in the Philadelphia area where he married, and raised two children. Returning to Sydney when he retired, Hugh was inducted into the Cape Breton Hall of Fame and the Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame.
Hugh is survived by his daughter Stacy (David) Lemon of Connecticut and his three precious granddaughters Christine (Jani), Connecticut; Sheri (Todd), Virginia and Julie at home. Hugh is also survived by his sisters, Mrs. Rita Dubois, Sydney; Mrs. Kay Devlin, New Jersey, a brother Joseph in Cornwall, Ontario and a niece and several nephews.
Hugh was predeceased by his wife, Patricia and son Hugh Jr.
There will be no visitation for the late Mr. Campbell. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, February 11 at 11 a.m., 2011 at St. Joseph Church with Revs. Conrad Edwards and Peter MacDonald officiating. Interment at a later date.
