Lois Dakin (McKay)

At the Charlotte County Hospital, St. Stephen, NB, Lois McKay-Dakin of St. Stephen, NB, in her 101st year passed away at 8:05 am on February 16, 2011. Survived by four sons: Rodney (Ruth) MacKay, Lunenburg, NS; Art (Marg) MacKay, Bocabec, NB; Richard (Patricia) MacKay, St. Stephen, NB; Curtis (Gail) MacKay, Deer Island, NB; grandchildren Allison Nelson, Cathryn MacKay/Kilby, David MacKay, Donald MacKay, Kimberly Pendleton, Karen MacKay, Bobby-Joe MacKay, Ericka MacKay, Serena Bradford, and Curtis MacKay Jr; great grandchildren; sister Isobel Bosein, St. Stephen, NB; several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her parents, four brothers, her husband Stewart, her second husband Ronald Dakin, and two sons. Lois was born April 14, 1910 to Eula and Chester Guptill of Grand Harbour, Grand Manan where she grew up and went to school. At the age of 16 she boarded the Grand Manan Ferry, disembarked to St. Stephen and walked to the Chipman Memorial Hospital where she was trained as a Registered Nurse and stayed in the Nurses" Residence. It was at this time that she met W. Stewart McKay. They were married on Dec. 28, 1931 and began raising a family in St. Stephen. She practiced her profession at the St. Stephen Hospital, the Calais Hospital, and underwent further training at Biddeford, Maine and elsewhere. Subsequently the family moved to Fredericton where she continued to work as an RN. Lois and Stewart moved to Deer Island in the late 1970's where she worked in the medical clinic there. She was active in the Order of the Eastern Star, Girl Guides, and other local organizations.
Resting at The S.O. Mehan & Son Funeral Home Ltd., 23 Main Street, St. Stephen, NB, 506-466-1844 from where the funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 19, 2011 at 11:00 am with Rev. Dr. Garth Williams of Union Street Atlantic Baptist Church officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery, 2:30 pm, Richardson, Deer Island, NB. Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm on Friday, February 18, 2011 at the funeral home. The family of Lois McKay-Dakin wishes to extend their sincere thanks to Dr. Lesley Pinder, Dr. Kaye, the nursing staff on Floor 1 at the Charlotte County Hospital, the staff at McLay's Oak Bay Haven, and also the staff at McNay's White House for the kindness they showed to Lois during her many visits there.
