Laurie Cormier

It is with sadness that we announce the death of Laurie Cormier, of Moncton, at the Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont University Hospital, on Thursday February 24, 2011 following a courageous battle with cancer. Born on December 14, 1927 in St-Grégoire, NB, he was the son of Alyre Cormier and Madeleine Robichaud. Besides his second wife, Irène Gauvin, he is survived by his sisters: Anita and Berthe of St-Grégoire, Doris (Ted), Léona (Gérard), Carmella and Odette, all of Moncton and Belita of Florida; his brothers: Émile (Maria) of Bouctouche and Normand of St-Grégoire; his step-children: Normand (Rosella) of St-Antoine, Paul (Carole) and Florence (Georges) of Moncton, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife, Stella Thibodeau (1999) and one brother, Adélard (Albertine). Laurie took his classic course at Collège Sacré-Cœur in Bathurst and obtained his civil engineer degree from University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, in 1955 and worked with civil services for 35 years. Laurie played an integral part in Atlantic Canada’s airports infrastructure as a civil engineer with Transport Canada, air transportation division, during the important expansion period of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. Laurie retired in 1989 as regional manager, air transportation, architecture and engineering, with Public Works Canada. Throughout his long career, he gained the respect of his colleagues and many business people with his professional character and his tact. A sports enthusiast, particularly of curling and golf, Laurie was the president of Beauséjour Curling Club for many years and a long time member of the Moncton Golf and Country Club. Sincere thanks from the Cormier family to the staff of Canterbury Hall as well as the doctors and nurses of the Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont University Hospital Centre for their professional and personal care during this difficult time. We were deeply touched by your attention and tenderness.
