BUTT, George Winsor - 77, of Kentville, passed away Wednesday, February 23, 2011 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville due to Alzheimer’s and cancer. Born in Freshwater, Carbonear, Newfoundland, he was the son of the late Leonard and Clarissa (Winsor) Butt. A graduate of Prince of Wales College in St. John’s, NL, he was active in athletics and the Air Cadet program, participating in both track and rowing events, which provided the foundation for a life-long dedication to sports and service to community. He was a founding member of 515 “North Atlantic” Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron in St. John’s, ultimately rising to the rank of Warrant Officer First Class, earning his pilot’s wings, being selected as a member of the Air Cadet International Drill Team which competed in Texas, and representing Canada again when he was selected as the only Newfoundland cadet to visit the USA as part of the International Air Cadet Exchange Program in 1951. He joined the Bank of Montreal in St. John’s in 1952 and served the Bank in various capacities at Newfoundland branches in St. John’s, Grand Falls, Buchans, Botwood and as Branch Manager in Curling-Corner Brook, NL, before being transferred as Manager to Kentville, NS, in 1966. Making Kentville and the Annapolis Valley his permanent residence, he commuted daily when later transfers made him Branch Manager in Wolfville and Berwick. He also commuted daily to Halifax for three years when he was attached to the Department of the Senior Vice President as a Regional Credit Officer. Occasionally other duties took him to Montreal and New York City for short periods of time. Retiring after 30 years of banking, he then worked as an insurance broker and financial planner and also spent six years as the Independent Member on the Nova Scotia Dairy Commission. In Kentville he spent many winters coaching various all-star representational minor hockey league teams and curled at the Glooscap Curling Club where he served as Secretary. A life-long “Habs” fan, he was involved in facilitating two Montreal Canadiens spring training sessions held in Kentville. Also an avid golfer, he was a familiar face at the Ken-Wo Golf and Country Club where his service over the years included that of Club President. He was a director of the Red Cross and campaigned for them for over 25 years. He also assisted in campaigns for Cancer, VON, March of Dimes, BFM & Valley Regional Hospital, Alzheimer’s and the Salvation Army Christmas Kettle campaign. An active and dedicated member of the Kentville Gyro Club since 1966, he served as both a District and International Governor, was the recipient of several awards for the Gyro Bulletin he produced, and, in 2001, was selected as the International Gyro of the Year for North America. In 2001 he was also selected by ATV as the “Maritimer of the Week” for his numerous community service contributions over the years, and primarily for his 30 years of continuous involvement with the Annapolis Valley Apple Blossom Festival that included time as Festival President. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 55 years, Dorothy (Parsons); son, Doug (Joan) Ottawa, Ontario; daughter, Linda (Irvan) Deveau, Salmon River, Digby Co., NS; brothers, Leonard (Ruth) and Winston (Mary) of St. John’s; sisters, Eileen (Gene) Garland and Patricia of St. John’s; grandchildren, Katherine, Kentville and Evan, Ottawa; step grandchildren, Jessica McCarron, Bedford, NS and Melissa (Jacob) Hammerly, Casa Grande, AZ; step great-grandchildren, Emma and Abigail McCarron and Axton Hammerly, and many nieces and nephews.
