MACCHARLES, Laura Mae - 78, of Wolfville, with heartfelt sadness; we the family regretfully announce her passing on Thursday February 24, 2011 at the Valley Regional Hospital. Born on September 25, 1932; to the late Vernon and Laura (Berry) Spencer. Laura remained and raised her family in Wolfville for the majority of her life. She developed her strong work ethics at a very young age working for Daniel Price in his restaurant. Laura was employed at Acadia University for 39 years, taking 10 years off to take care of her own mother until her death in 1974. Laura’s greatest joys in life were her family and friends. The “teapot” was always on and some homemade goodies ready for sharing. Laura met the love of her life, Clarence in 1962.; as a young single mother. Together they raised his children, her children, and two children of their own. Surviving are Laura’s children Sheila (Keith) Morton, Wolfville; Malcolm (Darlene) Brownell, New Minas; Clarence Wayne MacCharles (at home); and Dennis (Vicky) MacCharles, North Alton; step children Cathy Titus, Canaan; Paulette Brown, Annapolis Royal; and Brian MacCharles, Red Deer, AB; 9 grandchildren Heather, Patricia, David, Alicia, Angela, Natasha, Candace, Tyler and Shelby; 9 great grandchildren Kaileigh, Cody, Mackenzie, Aiden, Kieran, Ainsley, Luke, Kyra, and Brayden; brother Douglas Spencer (Windsor); sister Dorothy Hunt, Wolfville; as well as a very large and loving extended family. Laura was predeceased by her husband Clarence Milford MacCharles; brothers Basil, Clarence, and James Spencer; and son Blair Vernon MacCharles. At Laura’s request cremation has taken place and a visitation was held from 7-9 Sunday February 27, 2011 with a memorial service held on February 28, 2011 in the Serenity Lindsay Funeral Home Chapel, 568 Main Street, Wolfville, NS B4P 1E7 with Rev. Ellen Hunt officiating. Private family burial took place immediately following service. Family flowers only by request. Donations in Laura’s memory may be made to the “Carey Me Fund” or the Canadian Cancer Society. A very special thank you is extended to Paulette, Jackie, and their staff at Palliative Care and the VON homecare providers and nurses for their kindness and compassion making Laura’s final days comfortable and full of smiles. Thanks also to all the hospital staff, nurses and doctors at Valley Regional Hospital and both the QE11 and VG hospitals in Halifax for her excellent care.
