It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Donald Joseph Morrison. Donnie passed away Monday, Feb. 28, 2011, at his residence in Glace Bay, with his loving wife by his side.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Donald and Marguerite (Martell) Morrison, and was a former resident of Blackett Street, Glace Bay.
Donnie received his schooling in Glace Bay and furthered his education at Acadia University, where he attained his masters in mathematics, Dalhousie University and UCCB.
Donnie was a teacher at Morrison High for many years until he went to Glace Bay High as vice principal, he also taught night school in Glace Bay and for the last number of years he tutored many students in mathematics.
Donnie was a member of The Tyrian Youth Masonic Lodge No. 45, having served as master in 1977, secretary treasurer of the board of trustees of The Tyrian Youth Masonic Lodge No. 45; a member of the Cape Breton Lodge of Perfection; a member of the Isle Royal Chapter Rose Croix; a member of the Nova Scotia Sovereign Consistory and a member of Philae Temple of The Shrine.
Donnie was a very likable person who friends enjoyed spending time with, especially when they were having trouble solving a mathematical problem. He also enjoyed playing cards, doing puzzle books and for the past 10 years making crafts, which he and his wife Winnie would sell from their kiosk to passengers from the cruise ships in Sydney.
He will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Winnie (Gouthro); father in-law, Hugh Gouthro Sr., Port au Port, N.L.; sisters-in-law, Anne (Terry) Penny, Port au Port, N.L., Mary (David) Achorn, Lawrencetown, N.S., Kathy (Ron) Wheeler, Cambridge, Ont.; brother in-law, Hugh Gouthro Jr., Edmonton, Alta.; uncle, Harold Ulmer, Alberta; aunt, Jean Morrison, Sydney, N.S.; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Donnie was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Frank and Catherine Martell, paternal grandparents, Anges and Sadie Morrison, parents, Donald and Marguerite Morrison and mother-in-law, Florence Gouthro.
Visitation will be held Friday, March 4 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay, with a Masonic service to be held Friday evening at 6:45 p.m. A funeral service will be celebrated Saturday at 2 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ralph Johnson officiating. Interment will be at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Donnie’s memory may be made to the Glace Bay High School Scholarship Fund; the Glace Bay Food Bank or a charity of one’s choice.
