JOHNSON, Ernest (Ernie) Edward – 93 years, Yarmouth, NS, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 1, 2011 in Yarmouth Hospital. Born in Yarmouth on September 9, 1917, he worked as a dock worker in his early years, then as a custodian at the YMCA and the post office. He was a hard worker, never taking a sick day, but he always had time for his family and his church. The Sunday family drive was always the highlight of the week. Between family, church and work, he was an avid baseball player, playing for the South Stars and the Yarmouth Novies. He loved camaraderie, and he was one of the founding members of the Brotherhood in Yarmouth, along with his cousins and friends. His great love of music led him to start a gospel singing group called the Mission-Aires, who sang at Braemar Lodge and at other events in the Yarmouth area. The Mission-Aires also sang at the opening of Expo ’67 in Montreal, representing Nova Scotia. Along with his wife, Laura, they continued to sing and entertain audiences for many years, and he could always be heard singing or humming a tune. He served overseas during the second World War, in Europe, and he was a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 61, Yarmouth. He was a member of the Legion choir, he served on various committees and he was a member of the Legion bowling team – he loved the competition and team spirit. He could always be counted on for leading O Canada or God Save the Queen at Legion functions. He was the oldest living member of Temple Baptist Church, where he sang in the choir faithfully and served on various committees. He was well known for his honesty and integrity. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to all that knew him. He loved his four-legged friend, Dolly, who could always be found at his side. He was predeceased by his wife, Laura (Scott); brother, Henry (Buster) and Albert (Tuddie), and sister, Irene. He is survived by his sister, Jeanette (Jen) Bodden; children, Bruce (Peggy), Stephen (Becky), Gaynia (Lloyd); grandchildren, Vanessa, William, Kyle, Alexander, Trevor, Scott and Breanne. Visitation took place from 2-4 and 7-9 on Thursday, with a Royal Canadian Legion Service at 7:30 p.m., both at H. M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, 29 Albert Street, Yarmouth. The funeral was held Friday, March 4, at 2:30 p.m. at Temple Baptist Church, Yarmouth, Rev. Robert MacCormack officiated. Spring burial will take place at Yarmouth Mountain Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Temple Baptist Church (5 Bond Street, Yarmouth, NS, B5A 4B1), or to the Maple Grove-Yarmouth High Memorial Club.
