Hayward Boyd (John) Long
Passed on: February 28th, 2011
LONG, Hayward Boyd (John) – It is with great sadness and happy memories that we announce the passing of Hayward Boyd (John) Long in his 82nd year, on Monday, February 28, 2011 due to cancer of the pancreas. His final weeks were spent in his home comforted by the company of those who deeply loved and admired him.
Born on May 17, 1929 in St. John's, Newfoundland he was the cherished son of Jesse (nee Hart) and Arthur Hayward Long. Dear brother of Mary, Doris and his “third sister,” Pearl Learning. Predeceased by his wife Eileen (nee Paul) the woman who he loved and cherished from the moment that they met and his eldest son Bruce Arthur Long who he held in fondest memory for all of his days. He is survived by many who loved and were loved by him. Kim, Tracey, Huggie and John (treasures from his first marriage), Catherine, Mark, Steven, James and Brian, his children all, who learned the importance of family under his and Eileen’s guiding hands. Pop will also be missed by those who he considered his own through marriage to his children; Lise-Anne, Michele, Nelly, Gilles and Dunn, his 18 grandchildren, their wives, and 7 great-grandchildren, with one more on the way.
Dad lived a rich and productive life proving equal to all challenges that came his way. Having completed his studies at Bishops Field College in St. John’s, he served with 408 Photo Squadron of the RCAF before striking out on his own, always moving forward and, eventually, founding Simply Wood Furnishings, in Ottawa, Ontario; an establishment that stands today, just one of the cornerstones of his life of good work.
At Dad’s request, a small intimate gathering of immediate family will assemble to celebrate his life and accomplishments. Dad was a lifetime supporter of The Ottawa Mission and The Salvation Army. Should you wish, donations in his memory can be directed to these worthy institutions.
