With heartfelt sadness, we announce the peaceful passing of Emma Loretta Summerell on Sunday, March 6, 2011, at the Glace Bay Hospital.
Born Jan. 19, 1918, in Reserve Mines, Emma was a daughter of the late Frederick and Christine (MacKenzie) Ward and wife of the late John Summerell Sr.
Emma was honoured with life memberships in branch 78 Royal Canadian Legion, Immaculate Conception CWL and the senior choir. She was also active in the Ladies Bowling League, loved gardening and baking, and enjoyed her TV favourites.
Emma is survived by her children, Verna (Charles) Attwood, John (Debbie) Summerell, Elizabeth (John Allison) Hynes, Kathy (Dale) Burke and Margie Summerell; daughter-in-law, Catherine; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Lilly and Marie; and dear friend, Bernett Currie.
She was predeceased by son, Lawrence, two infant children, five brothers and two sisters, and was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Visitation today (Tuesday), 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay. Funeral Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated Thursday at 2 p.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, Rev. Daniel Boudreau officiating.
