Tired and worn out, the body of Emily Alfreda (Hill) MacLellan, 89, gave peace to her soul, gracefully and peacefully on Thursday, March 3, 2011 while residing at the Kenneth E. Spencer Memorial Home, Moncton. Formerly of Sackville, and born in Truro, NS, she was a daughter of the late George and Eva (McCurdy) Hill.
Emily graduated from Nova Scotia Teachers College and went on to Mount Allison University to get her BSc and later BEd. Emily was a teacher for over 30 years in Fredericton and Sackville, NB and was always actively involved with her students; and had chaperoned them on many wonderful trips abroad. Emily and Angus's house was always open to friends and family, everyone received a hearty welcome. The MacLellan home became famous as a gathering point for Mount A pals and the many friends she and Angus made along life's journey. One of their favourtine parties was to entertain all the grandchildren on Boxing Day each year, "no parents allowed".
She was instrumental in starting the Sackville Food Bank and supported many local and national charities including Moncton Headstart. In 1995, she was honored with the "Paul Harris Fellow" by the Moncton West and Riverview Rotary Club.
Emily will be sadly missed by her three sons, Charles (Mary Lou) of Saint John, Hugh (Margaret Rose) of Sackville, and Allan (Wanda) of Cocagne Cape; brother Bob (Ethel) Hill, Simcoe, ON and sister Marion (Ted) Olcott, New Jersey, USA; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Angus; brothers, Ted and Charles, and sister, Marg.
Emily's remains have been cremated under the care and supervision of Jones Funeral Home, 70 Bridge Street, Sackville, NB (506-364-1300). Honoring the request of the family, there will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held from the funeral home, 2 pm on Saturday, March 12, 2011.
