It is with deepest regret that we, the family of Carl David Ley announce his passing Wednesday, March 9, 2011. He died at the palliative care unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a brief illness.
He was born March 7, 1932, to Mary Belle (Lynk) and Harold Ley. After his mother died when he was a newborn he was raised by his aunt and uncle, Jane G. and John H. MacPherson in Donkin.
He graduated from Morrison High School in 1951 and as a young adult he was a member of the sea cadets where he received many certificates.
Carl worked at Devco for 38 years retiring in 1992 as manager of the Dominion Coal Yard.
He was a member of Gordon United Church where he held many posts over the years including clerk of session. Carl was a life member of the Reserve Mines Volunteer Fire Department for 46 years during which time he held the positions of assistant secretary, lieutenant hook and ladder, treasurer and member of the executive.
Carl’s pastimes included playing cards, visiting the casinos, travelling with the family, crafts, sports (especially watching the Toronto Maple Leafs) and spending time with his family. He may be best remembered for his sense of humour. In his youth, Carl was an accomplished athlete in hockey and boxing.
He is survived by his sons, Alan, with whom he resided, Dr. David (Ann); and daughter, Margo (Angus) Nicholson. Also surviving are grandchildren, Marissa and Ryan Ley, Matthew and Dillon Nicholson; his sister, Lillian Moquet; many nieces and nephews; special niece, Jackie Robertson and nephew, David MacMullen.
Carl was predeceased by his wife of 44 years, Marion (Beaton) in 1999, his sisters, Lila Andrews, Janet Malamakis, Martha MacMullen, brothers, Jimmy and Johnny MacPherson.
Visitation will be held at Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay, Thursday, March 10 from 7-9 p.m. and Friday, March 11 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in Gordon United Church, Reserve, with Martha MacDonald and Rev. David MacLean officiating. Burial to follow in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
