Harold Bates
On March 7, 2011, Harold Bates (b. 1924) died peacefully at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital. He is reunited with the love of his life Mary Helena (née McClelland) Bates, who predeceased him in June 2010. Born in Liverpool, England, Harold served in the Royal British Navy during WWII. Following the war he joined the Merchant Marines and earned the designation of Chief Engineer. After travelling the globe he decided to settle in Canada with his Irish wife, Mary. He joined Lloyds Register of Shipping (Montreal office) in 1965 and remained with them until retirement. He had a strong sense of civil society and was a proud member of The Council of Canadians. He embraced the latest technology and used his engineering abilities to design innovative solutions both at home and at work. He was happiest when surrounded by family and in 1998 they moved to Fredericton to play a larger role in their grandchildren’s lives. Harold was the primary caregiver to Mary who valiantly endured MS. He personified the true meaning of devotion and loyalty. Harold is survived by his daughter Penny Kilbride (Kevin), twin sons David and Peter (Stephen), his grandsons Adam and Scott and his brother Frank. He is predeceased by his parents and his brother Phillip.
A memorial service and interment will be held at a later date. Donations to the CNIB or The Council of Canadians in Harold’s name would be greatly appreciated. McAdam’s Funeral Home in Fredericton, NB to handle the arrangements. www.mcadamsfh.com
