Emily Coombs Stewart

Born In: Donegal, Ireland

STEWART, Emily Coombs - 1923-2011, Emily was born near Malin in Donegal, Ireland, married and built a nest for her three children at Daisy Hill, outside Derry. They emigrated to Canada aboard the Cunard Line’s Ascania, arriving at Pier 21 on March 7th, 1954 and settled in Toronto close to the Mullan family. Emily worked in Fran’s Restaurants, Laura Secord’s stores, and at Loblaws’ supermarkets. In her late 40’s, Emily went back to school to become a nursing assistant in Yellowknife, North West Territories. She loved the North and told stories of driving taxi or her first hitch-hiking experience across Great Slave Lake on a dog-sled, or volunteering as a ground spotter on aircraft searching for people lost in the wild. She also spent several years in Superior, Wisconsin, before creating her cozy Bear’s Nook at Torbrook Mines in the Annapolis Valley in Nova Scotia. Emily lived the past five years in Victoria, B.C., but her heart was in the Valley, her final resting place. She was the last of a family of eleven, of which nine made their way to Canada and the U.S. She leaves three children, eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews to celebrate her independence and continue her journeys.
