It is with sadness that we announce the passing of well known North Sydney resident Marie Catherine ‘Dea’ Anderson, 89, resident of Meech Avenue, North Sydney, on Saturday, March 12, 2011, at the Harbour View Hospital, Veterans Unit, Sydney Mines where she has been residing for the past year.
Born in North Sydney, Dea was a daughter of the late Angus and Jane (MacNeil) Keagan.
For many years she operated Reg F. MacNeil Agency, until her retirement.
She was a veteran of the Second World War, serving with Canadian Women Army Corps., a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #19. She was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney. She was volunteer with the #562 Cabot Squadron, Air Cadets, the Girl Guides and for 50 years with the Canadian Cancer Society. Dea was the first woman to serve as a town councillor for the Town of North Sydney. She was a proud supporter of the Cape Breton Liberal Association. In her younger years Dea enjoyed sports, being an active participant in hockey, baseball and bowling.
Dea is survived by her two sisters, Anna McCarthy, North Sydney and Jean Stickley, Goose Bay, Labrador; sisters-in-law, Ethel and Sybil Anderson and Nora Keagan, all of North Sydney and by numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence Anderson, seven brothers, Peter, Eddie, Charles, Blowers, Harry, Ernest and Tommy, by three sisters, Elizabeth Boutilier, Margaret Taylor and Edna Bowes.
Visitation for Dea will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Wednesday, at St. Joseph Church, North Sydney, with Rev. Jake Andrea officiating. Burial to take place at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
