Mildred (Mickie) Rowsell (Starkes)

Passed on: March 7th, 2011

age 44. Mickie passed away on March 7, 2011 at a hospital in Genk, Belgium, from complications of a recent surgery. Mickie is predeceased by her parents-in-law Rex and Emma (Morey) Rowsell, of Port Anson, NL. Mickie was raised in Robert’s Arm, NL, by parents Linda and Gordon Starkes. It was there that she met and married Rick Rowsell, the love of her life for 30 years. Mickie and Rick became proud parents of their daughter, Jenna in 1993. As the spouse of a Canadian Military member Mickie was “posted” to a number of cities across Canada, including Gander, Edmonton, and Trenton. The most recent posting in 2008 saw Mickie and family move to Kreuzrath, Germany, as Rick was posted to the NATO Air Base Geilenkirchen. Mickie supported her country for over 25 years as a military spouse. She managed the family life and provided support to her husband during the many tours away from home. Mickie also provided friendship and support to other military families who needed it in dealing with the high stress levels encountered in military life. Mickie was a very social person and enjoyed meeting people. Having lived in several communities she formed many lasting friendships. She was known to approach strangers in her new neighbourhood and tell them that she felt they should be friends, and so they became, it was as natural and simple as that. With the challenge of distance separating Mickie from her many friends, she often kept in touch through Facebook. In Mickie’s messages it was clear that she was a person who enjoyed life, embraced simple pleasures, loved her family, was so proud of her daughter and husband, loved Newfoundland and Canada, offered kindness and support to her many, many friends, openly shared herself with others, and truly lived. Mickie enjoyed travel and took advantage of the different places she lived to explore the world around her. This was especially true with the posting to Germany, where as a family they travelled extensively throughout Europe. She enjoyed writing about her travels and sharing it with her friends. Mickie has been taken from us much too soon. She will be remembered for her big smile, infectious laugh, love of life, and love for her family. She is survived by her loving husband Rick, treasured daughter Jenna, parents Gordon & Linda, brothers Bruce (Rhea) & Robert (Cathy), sister Cindy, adored niece Jada & nephew Bradley, special foster sister Brenda, extended family and many friends. In keeping with Mickie’s spirit of generosity, in lieu of flowers a donation to the CFS St. John’s Military Family Resource Centre or the charity of your choice would be appreciated by her family. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service in celebration of Mickie's life will be held at Carnell’s Funeral Home (Topsail Road) on March 16/2011. Open visitation will be from 2 pm to 6 pm. Expressions of condolences may be made by visiting Carnell’s online (www.carnell’s.com).
