POTTER - Laura Karen, age 93, of Gull Lake, SK passed away Thursday, March 10, 2011 at Cypress Regional Hospital in Swift Current. The funeral service was held at 2:00 pm on Monday, March 14, 2011 at Knox United Church in Gull Lake with Rev. Bonita Chad officiating. The music was provided by Millie Spagrud, Sharon Dahl, and King Gin. Eulogists were granddaughters Shannon Metivier, Leita Elder, and Shari McComber. Ushers were great grandchildren Chantel & Dayton Potter. The interment service will be held at Gull Lake Cemetery at a later date. The pallbearers were grandsons: Brad Potter, Blaine Potter, Shawn Potter, Duaine Messer, Kevin Messer, Marvin Messer and Adrian Thornton. Laura is survived by: her son Les (Bev) Potter and their children Blaine (Grace) Potter, Shannon (Glen) Metivier, and Shawn (Kathleen) Potter; son Norman (Joyce) Potter and their children Brad (Nadine) Potter and Leita (Darren) Elder; daughter Karen Messer and her children Duaine (Leann) Messer, Kevin (Sharilyn) Messer, and Marvin (Laura) Messer; daughter Phyllis (Larry) Thornton and their children Shari (Robert) McComber and Adrian Thornton; and 18 great grandchildren. Laura was predeceased by her husband Chignell Potter (1970), sister Lillian (Tom) Hughes (1974), and son-in-law Hilliard Messer (2007). Laura Hansen was born to Harry and Inga Hansen at home in the Bloomville District on December 10, 1917. She had one sister Lillian. Her mother Inga died in March 1926 when Laura was 8 years old. Her father was away a lot and her sister was boarding in Gull Lake for school so her aunt and uncle raised her with their family. Chig and Laura were married in 1941 and farmed north of Gull Lake. In 1939 Chig also started working as projectionist at the Lyceum Theatre in Gull Lake. In 1964 Chig and Laura bought the theatre and made it a family operation until Laura sold it a few years after Chig died. Laura stayed in the family home in Gull Lake until January 2004 when she moved to Conrad Apartments and then in June of 2007 to Autumn House which was her home until she died. Laura was a charter member of Women's Institute (formerly Homemakers Club). She loved getting together with other farm women. She also loved to crochet and made afghans for all her grandchildren. Other things she enjoyed were crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, game shows, and reading. Laura's family was very important to her. She remembered every grandchild's, and great grandchild's, birthday. Her church was also important as was her Norwegian heritage. Her lefse was a family favourite.
