It is with deep regret that we, the family, announce the passing of our dear father and husband, Peter Warren Hopkins, 71, on July 16, 2009, at the Northside General Hospital, after a brief illness.
Born in Sydney Mines, Peter was the son of the late Maxwell and Mary (Carew) Hopkins. He was a faithful member of Immaculate Conception Parish, Sydney Mines.
For many years, Peter was employed by Cape Breton Development Corporation at Princess Colliery in Sydney Mines and later employed by Marine Atlantic in North Sydney. Peter was highly regarded by all of his coworkers and will be greatly missed.
For most of his life, Peter was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed spending much of his free time fishing and hunting. Peter also enjoyed travelling and gardening. But Peter's greatest joy in life was his family and he will be missed by all of them dearly.
Peter is survived by his soul mate and best friend of fifty years, Patricia (MacKinnon) Hopkins, Sydney Mines; daughters, Wanda (Lewis) MacNeil, Millville, Arlene (James) Smith, Fort McMurray, Carol (Farrell) Hopkins, North Sydney, and sons Wayne (Lisa) Sydney Mines, Bruce (Dorothy) Calgary, Brent, Halifax, Darren (Debbie), Hammonds Plains, and daughter-in-law, Frances Hopkins, Sydney.
Peter will be dearly missed by his sixteen grandchildren and one great grandchild. Everyone loved spending time with ‘Poppy’.
Peter is also survived by sisters, Maxine (James) Billard, Georges River, Wendy (Wayne) Hicks, Sydney Mines and brother Freddy, St. Catherines, Ont.
Peter was predeceased by son Doug, Calgary; sisters, Joan Young, Maugerville, N.B., Lynn Gardiner, Sydney Mines, Sharyn Musgrave, Sydney Mines and brothers, Ronald, Toronto and Kenneth, Toronto.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation for Peter Hopkins will take place in J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines on Monday, July 20, 2009, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral liturgy celebrating Peter's life will be held on Tuesday, July 21, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church , Sydney Mines, with Fr. Thomas John officiating. The burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Sydney Mines. A reception will follow in the Immaculate Conception hospitality room.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Peter's memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
