It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our dear brother, uncle and friend, Daniel Basker, on Sunday, March 13, 2011, at the Veteran’s Unit of Harbour View Hospital, Sydney Mines.
Born in North Sydney, he was the son of the late Alexander and Veronica (Gouthro) Basker. Danny was a veteran of the Korean War serving with the Canadian Army. He was a member of Branch #19, Royal Canadian Legion for over 50 years, and a member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney. He was employed as a stevedore with CN Marine in North Sydney until his retirement.
Danny had a passion for visiting places he had never seen. He travelled extensively through all of Canada and the United States, including Hawaii; as well as Europe, Australia and Singapore. He enjoyed spending summer days with old friends on Commercial Street in North Sydney, and Tim Hortons.
He is survived by his brother Leo, of Yarmouth; his nephew, Pat (Betty) Basker, North Sydney; many other nieces and nephews; as well as his life long friend Duke Strickland.
Danny was predeceased by his brothers, Bill, John, Alex, Tom and Freddy in infancy.
There will be no visitation by request. A funeral service will be held Friday, 10 a.m., at the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Jake Andrea officiating. Burial at a later date in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
