Orland (Orlie) Robertson of Hazlet passed away on July 14, 2009 at the age of 90 years. A private family graveside service was held on Saturday, July 18, 2009 at the Bethany Lutheran Cemetery with Pastor Linda Hall officiating. The family held a reception at the Hazlet Community Hall following the graveside service.
Orland is survived by his wife Phyllis, two sons; Steve (Shari) Robertson, their children Orrin, Rachel, Ian and Ryan. Tim (Bev) Robertson, their children Cianna and Jayden. A sister Marie Zinn, two sisters-in-law Kay Robertson and Etta Robertson and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his father Donald Kerr (DK) Robertson, mother Myrtle Robertson Nee: Scott, three brothers; Lawrence, Leonard(Toby), Ronald(Mickey). Sister-in-law Yvonne Robertson, brother-in-law Holly Zinn, infant daughter Shelly-Jo Robertson, father-in-law Sam Lien, mother-in-law Jo Lien and sister-in-law Thelma Colter and her husband Ed.
Orland (Orlie) Robertson was born July 27,1918 in Welwyn, Saskatchewan to DK and Myrtle Robertson, the fourth in a family of five. He admitted to his nose being out of joint at the age of sixteen when baby brother Mickey was born and he was no longer the youngest, but of course he soon doted on him. The family
moved to Hazlet in 1931. During his school years he worked on threshing crews, worked at Regina beach for Chow from the Hazlet cafe and with the C.P.R. In 1940 Orlie enlisted in the army.
His brother Toby also enlisted in the army and his brother Lawrence enlisted in the airforce and went missing in action over Holland. Orlie served six years in the army, most of it with the Fort
Gary Horse, a tank corps. He served in Canada before being sent to England and Scotland. He landed on D-day and served in France, Holland, Belgium and Northern Germany. He came home to farm, working the winters in the bush in Ontario. He married Phyllis Lien in 1948 and they had two sons, Steve and Tim. He farmed
until 1983 when they moved to Hazlet where he lived until his passing. He enjoyed farming, hunting, fishing, camping as well as coaching and playing sports. In later years, Orlie spent most of his time watching his favoraite sports on tv and spending time with his grandkids. He was proud of his family and the grandkids learned quickly that his bark was worse than his bite. He will be missed.
