We, the family of Catherine 'Kay' Keylor (nee MacLean) regretfully announce her death at age 82. She passed away on Wed. July 15, 2009 at her summer cottage at Kempt Head, Southside Boularderie Island which was the ‘Home of Her Heart’.
Mom was born on January 23, 1927 in Glace Bay, N.S. and resided on Dominion Street, Glace Bay. She was the daughter of Michael ‘Mickey’ McLean born in Sydney Mines and Selena ‘Lena’ McLean (Dunphy) born in White Point, Victoria County.
A homemaker for ten years, Mom attended Normal College in 1960 after the death of her husband and became a teacher. She taught at Saint Anthony School for many years before becoming a Circuit French teacher, traveling to elementary schools throughout the industrial area where she was known to students as ‘Madame Keylor’.
Mom was actively involved in her Parish life serving on Parish Council, as a choir member, Eucharistic Minister, Lector, Greeter and Altar Server. She too at one time was involved with the Citizens Service League, Christopher Leadership Course and Peer Teaching. She always had a least one foster child through Foster Parents of Canada and in recent years requested Christmas presents for her be in the form of donations for farm animals and other essentials in Third World countries.
Upon retiring Mom took a Gaelic course as well as fiddle lessons and as a member of ‘The Monday Nighters’ she helped entertain at local Seniors Complexes and hospitals. She enjoyed swimming as well as doing ceramics and come Christmas her children, nieces and nephews and ‘special friends’ will be putting out decorations that they received from ‘Katie’.
Mom is survived by six children, John, Anne, Michael, Barbara, Mary-Rose and Colleen all of Glace Bay.
As well as her children she leaves to mourn her, her grandchildren,
John (Karen), Liam, and Alana Keylor, Andrew and Kelly Warner
Angela and Michael Keylor, Erin and Mark MacLeod.
‘GG’ as she was known to her Great Grandchildren will be missed by,
Kaitlyn, Cameron and Meaghan Keylor as well as by Kali MacLeod.
Mom is survived by her youngest brother, Mike ‘Mick’ MacLean, Glace Bay.
By Sister-in-law, Rachel ‘Rae’ McNeil, Glace Bay; brothers-in-law, Trainor Donovan, Glace Bay and Joe MacKenzie, Lower Sackville, N.S.
Mom was predeceased by her husband John Bernard Keylor; her parents and by brothers, Neil, Glace Bay, James (Jim), Sydney Forks and George, Comox, BC as well as by sisters, Greta Doucette, Glace Bay and Anne Longenbaker, Columbus, Ohio. Mom was also predeceased by an infant son.
Visitation will be held on Saturday evening from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay.
Funeral mass is Monday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. in Saint Anthony’s Church, Dominion Street, Glace Bay. Burial to take place in Parish Cemetery with Father Jake Andrea officiating. Reception to follow in the parish hall.
Suggested Memoriams are the Canadian Cancer Society or charity of one’s choice.
