Murray ‘Mackie’ MacIntosh, 75, of Sydney, passed away peacefully at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, with his family at his side, Tuesday March 15, 2011.
Born in Sydney, he was the oldest son of the late Henry and Lillian (Gallivan) MacIntosh in a family of eight children.
Mackie graduated from Sydney Academy in 1954 and then went to work as a linesman with Maritime Tel & Tel, where he stayed for a few years before gaining employment with the Sydney Police Department for 37 years working in various positions including the Identification Department and then as Staff Sergeant.
In his earlier years, Mackie kept quite a busy schedule throughout the years, always finding time to work on various projects and try different hobbies. He hunted deer and moose in Newfoundland with his father and brothers, also supervised the building of 13 houses in the Sydney area, one of which his wife, Ada, still resides in. Mackie had a love of reading and especially enjoyed historical books. He had an advantage as his wife worked at McConnell Library for many years.
Mackie also coached baseball and hockey teams with many championship teams to his credit. In the process he developed many longtime friendships.
He is survived by his wife, Ada (Penny) and children, Mona, Bradley (Valerie) and Murray (Darlene); sisters, Norma (Doug) Woodill, Henrietta (Ralph) Johnston, Heather (George) Townsend; brothers, Sylvester (Barbara), John (Betty), Surrey, B.C. and William (Cathy), Louisbourg. Also survived by son-in-law, David Kedziora, Whitehorse; sisters-in-law, Betty MacIntosh, Connie Wolschlag, Florida, Eileen (Roddie) MacNeil, Debra (Jerry) Verwey, B.C. and Christina Jeune, B.C. Grandchildren include, Lindsay, Kelly, Ashley, Krysta, Keigan MacIntosh and Henry, Charles and Louis Kedziora, Whitehorse, Yukon.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a daughter, Sylvia (2007) and a brother, Myles.
Visitation will take place today (Wednesday) 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Sydney Memorial Chapel. Funeral service will be held Thursday, March 17, 2011, at 2 p.m. in Bethel Presbyterian Church with Rev. Ralph Johnston officiating. Interment in Oakfield Cemetery, Marion Bridge, at a later date.
