It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of a remarkable mother, grandmother and great grandmother on March 16, 2011 at the Cove Guest Home after a brief illness.
Born on Feb. 13,1916 in Harbor Breton, Nfld., Bessie was the daughter of the late Noami and Thomas Bungay.
Mom was a woman who had deep faith in her God and was a devoted member of the Salvation Army Corps in Glace Bay. She worked diligently for the corps, always active in the Home League donating her beautiful crochet and knitted handiwork as well as cooking in the kitchen for the annual church suppers.
Bessie will always be remembered as a genuine lady with a gentleness of spirit, love of family and friends, undying faith and quick wit.
She was predeceased by her parents, husbands, Sydney Ferneyhough and George Ashe. She was also predeceased by her sister, Beatrice Porter; brothers, Bill and Max Bungay and stepson, Fred Ferneyhough.
Left to mourn are sister, Evelyn Moffitt, Mass.; daughters, Doreen (Frank) Lanigan, Dartmouth, Elaine (Jack) MacQueen, Glace Bay; sons, Wayne (Judy) Ferneyhough, Dartmouth, Bill Ferneyhough, Taigh na Mara, Glace Bay; stepdaughters, Corrine Shea, London, Ontario, Carolyn (Sheldon) MacDonald, Glace Bay, Agnes (Darien) Ingraham, New Brunswick; stepsons, Ross Ferneyhough, Woodstock, Ont., Cecil (Sally) Ferneyhough, Brockville, Ont., Hughie Ashe, Mira, George (Violet) Ashe, Beaverbank, N.S.; daughter-in-law, Joyce Ferneyhough, N.B.; granddaughters, Kim (Alan) Murnaghan, Kori (Peter) Miller, Jennifer (Jason) MacQueen; grandsons, Kurt (Andrea) Lanigan, Ken Ferneyhough; great-granddaughters, Amanda, Sarah, Hannah; great-grandsons, Aiden and Ryan; step-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and a special friend, Rose Sollazzo, with whom she shared her room at the Cove.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay.
Visitation will be held on Friday, March 18, 2011 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. with funeral service to be held on Saturday, March 19, 2011 at 2 p.m. at the Salvation Army Citadel.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army or to a charity of choice.
