It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Gordon Parsons of Glace Bay. Gordon passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 15, 2011, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital with his loving family by his side.
Born Jan. 11, 1923, in Rose Blanche, N.L., he was the son of the late John Albert and Annie (Strickland) Parsons.
For the greater part of his life, he was a resident of the town, a member of St. Anne’s Church and a proud member of the Merchant Marines.
In his earlier years Gordon fished on dragger boats out of Newfoundland, Louisbourg, Glace Bay and later worked in the fish processing plants for Highland and Clearwater Fisheries. He was a very quiet and soft-spoken family man who will be remembered for his sense of humour and his quick wit. In his spare time, Gordon enjoyed doing yard work and making to scale replicas of ‘Newfoundland Boats’ to give to family and friends.
He will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 49 years, Susan (MacDonald) Parsons; daughter, Margaret Ann (Andrew) MacDonald, Glace Bay; son, Duncan, at home; granddaughter, Nicole Parsons, Sydney; brothers, William (Anne), John (Mabel), Austin (Anne), all of Newfoundland, and Ron, Glace Bay; sisters, Susie (Hubert), Annie Mae (George), Milita, all of Newfoundland; nieces, nephews and friends.
Besides his parents he was also predeceased by brothers, Clyde and Wilfred.
In honoring Gordon’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral mass. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A private family interment with graveside prayers lead by Fr. Leo Boone, will be in St. Anne’s Cemetery at a later date.
