Passed in: Glace Bay/New Victoria, Nova Scotia, Canada
Passed on: March 15th, 2011

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mom, nanny, great nanny, and sister, Dolena ‘Dolly’ MacIsaac, 93, of Victoria Haven Nursing Home, Glace Bay, and formerly of Lower Daley Road, New Victoria, on March 15, 2011, at Glace Bay Hospital.
Born in Port Ban, Inverness County, she was a daughter of the late John Alex and Mary (MacDonald) Kennedy.
Dolly was a member of the former St. Joseph Church in New Victoria. She was very proud of her Scottish heritage and enjoyed many facets of the culture. Fluent in Gaelic, she was also an accomplished highland dancer who danced at various parish picnics throughout the area in her early years. She always remained true to her roots and, in later years, learned how to play the fiddle and continued to follow the highland dancing and Scottish music scene. Her enthusiasm was eventually passed on to her succeeding family, many of whom are actively involved in highland dancing and playing the bagpipes. During her younger years Dolly loved to ski and drive her vehicle and continued to drive a car well into her 80s.
Surviving are daughters, Diane (Dennis) Deveaux, Millie, both of New Waterford; sons, Alex (Deanna), Victoria Mines, Jack (Evelyn), New Glasgow; sisters, Madeline MacIsaac and Millie MacEachern, both of Inverness; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Dolly was predeceased by her husband, John Archie MacIsaac, four brothers, Dougall, Joe, Jack and Neil, three sisters, Kay Phillips, Sarah MacIsaac and Mary Margaret ‘Mendy’ MacIsaac.
Visitation will be held Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration for Dolly will take place Friday, March 18 at 2 p.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, New Victoria, with a luncheon to follow at St. Leonard’s Parish Hall on Convent Street, New Waterford.
Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hospice/Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton.
Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.vjmcgillivray.ca.
