It is with broken hearts and deep sadness we announce the passing of a wonderful, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. William Daniel Dixon, 85, passed away with his loving family by his side on March 17, 2011, in Buchanan Memorial Hospital, Neils Harbour.
Born in White Point, March 3, 1926, he was a son of the late Francis and Agnes (MacKinnon) Dixon.
In his early years he was a lobster, crab and salmon fisherman, this was his passion for many years. Even after retirement Dan remained eager and helpful to his sons during fishing season. He greatly enjoyed watching the sunset over the ocean while watching and keeping track of the boats out on the water.
One of Dan’s greatest hobbies was his daily walk to Point Hill — a hiking trail along the ocean. He took great pride in maintaining the land, and cemetery of the unknown sailor, this will always be a peaceful and sacred place for him.
Dan will be sadly missed by his wife, Eliza (Fitzgerald); sons, Nelson (Lisa), John, Junior (Ann Marie), Todd (Angie); daughters, Amarlis ‘Muggins,’ Marie (Gerard) Briand and Mary (Glenn) Fricker; 18 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. Also survived by sister, Jean Jobe; brother, Archie Dixon.
He was predeceased by sister, Edna Halloran, brothers, Jellico, Leo Dixon and Parnel Williams, son, Daniel Francis, special son-in-law, Richard MacDonald, great-grandson, Richard Gerald MacDonald.
Dan will be remembered for his great love for his family. He had a special place in his heart for everyone. Spending time with his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren filled him with pride and joy. He was always there for his family. Dan will also be missed by his walking buddies Owen and Tandum.
A big thank you to the doctors, nurses and home-care workers who provided care to Dan.
In honouring Dan’s wishes cremation has taken place and a funeral mass will be held at Saint Joseph’s parish, Dingwall, 11 a.m. Saturday, March 19, Fr. Dan MacDonald officiating. Interment in Dingwall Cemetery.
Donations in memory may be made to the Cancer Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital or to a charity of choice.
