It is with sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our husband, father and grandfather, Arthur Campbell Grant, 91, a resident of Keltic Drive, Balls Creek, on Friday, March 18, 2011, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney, in the company of loving family members.
Born in Campbell’s Hill, Oct. 17, 1919, Arthur was a son of the late Hilton Henry and Jennie Margaret (Campbell) Grant.
He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving with the Canadian army as an instructor and was injured during a training exercise.
Arthur was raised and brought up in Balls Creek and along with his wife Bertha ‘Dups’ MacLellan, raised his own family there. Arthur and Bertha ‘Dups’ celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on Sept. 21, 2010.
Arthur was a very proud and capable man of many talents who was never one to shy away from hard work. He was employed as a steelworker for over 30 years at the Sydney steel plant until his retirement. He took pride in being a steelworker and developed lasting bonds with co-workers.
As a young man he worked in the service station business, where he became quite handy at swapping and selling cars to make extra money. Arthur always had a job on the side, he worked at well drilling, plumbing, carpentry, selling fish, furniture crating, laundromat service and maintenance, ship refuelling, telephone line maintenance.
The favourite getaway was the cabin he built near Ottawa Brook, which he and ‘Dups’ enjoyed for many years, summer and winter. His Cape Breton roots were deep and he lived his entire life in Balls Creek and loved to talk about the family homes he built there. He was a member of the Northern Yacht Club for many years.
Arthur was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
He will be sadly missed by his beloved wife, Bertha ‘Dups’ (MacLellan) Grant; his children, Jim (Sharon) Grant, Riverview, N.B., Diane (Joe) Metz, Baddeck, Peggy (Donald) MacLeod, North Sydney, Danny (Bonita) Grant, Vancouver, Shelley (Joe) Barry and Troy (Trish) Grant, both of North Sydney; his grandchildren, Todd, Derrick and Scott Grant, Michael, Timmy and Cory Sawchuk, Judd, Hayes and Grant MacLeod, Michael and Jeffrey Grant, Kerri and Christopher Saunders, Aaron Barry, Kristy and Lexie Grant, also surviving are 21 great-grandchildren, Alex, Jillian, Rachel, Isaac, Samuel, Maggie, Drew, Mya, Matthew, Karly, Kyle, Madison, Phillip, Victoria, Cody, Gage, Riley, Ava, Bryce, Ella and Alexandra; also several nieces and nephews.
He was a lover of animals, no one can remember a time when Art did not have a dog, Toby being his last.
Arthur was predeceased by an infant son, Kevin in 1947, his brother, Allister Grant in 2003, and sister, Ruth Crossan in 2004.
