Elizabeth Anderson MacLeod Lynk, 92, passed away Tuesday, March 29, 2011, at the Glace Bay Hospital.
Elizabeth was born in Glace Bay, May 15, 1917, daughter of Wilburforce and Mary (Anderson) MacLeod.
She graduated from Glace Bay General Hospital School of Nursing in 1939. Elizabeth then moved to New York to pursue a career in nursing and shortly after enlisted in the U.S. Army. During the Second World War she was present at the Staten Island Barracks where the life-saving antibiotic penicillin was first introduced. She also spent part of the war overseas in England. She later re-enlisted and served in the Korean War.
She later attended the University of Colorado where she earned a masters degree in psychiatric nursing which she would teach at the same institution.
Elizabeth married Norman Lynk of Glace Bay and returned home to Cape Breton in 1970. They lived in Glace Bay and enjoyed many summers at Round Island. Norman predeceased Elizabeth in 1983.
Elizabeth was active with the Friends of the Savoy, Community Friends, Glace Bay General Hospital Alumni and the Ostomy Society. She enjoyed playing bridge and cribbage.
Elizabeth will be missed by her niece/step-daughter, Dr. Mary Elizabeth Lynk, New Waterford. She is also survived by nephews, Wilbur (Judy) MacLeod, Donnie MacLeod and David (Beth) MacLeod; niece, Michelle MacLeod and her grandnieces and grandnephews. She will also be missed by the Billard, Milburn, Jala and MacDonald families who always considered Elizabeth to be family.
The family would like to thank all the devoted caregivers who tended to Elizabeth over the years.
Besides her husband, Elizabeth was predeceased by siblings, Cameron, Arthur, Donald, Ada and Jessie.
Visitation for Elizabeth will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday, April 1. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, April 2 with Rev. Duncan Roach officiating. Both will take place at Patten Funeral Home and Chapel, Union Street, Glace Bay.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Ostomy Society.
