It is with sadness we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Sadie Mae MacLean at Seaview Manor, Glace Bay on Tuesday, March 29, 2011, where she had made her home for the past 11 months. Previously, Sadie lived at Williston House, Sydney.
Sadie was born August 5, 1916, at Riverside, Inverness County. She was the eldest daughter of the late Archie and Mary (MacCuish) Dowling. She was the last surviving member of her family.
Sadie completed her nurses training at the Sydney City Hospital. During her career, she nursed at the Steel Co. Hospital, VON, and the Cove. She was a member of the Nursing School Alumni. As well, she was a member of the Cove Auxiliary, Friendship Guild, the Thursday morning Bible Study Group at Bethel Presbyterian Church, and a life-long member of the Atlantic Mission Society.
She is survived by daughter, Brenda (Alan Skinner), Howie Centre; their children, Bruce (Krista), Halifax and Sarah, Rainbow Lake, Alta.; great-grandsons, Nicholas and James; son, Ian (Judith); their children, Catherine and Andrew, Prescott, Ont.; two first cousins, Bob Dowling, Jasper, Alta. and Chris Rosello, Port Hawkesbury.
She was predeceased by her husband, Charles J. MacLean; sister, Annabelle MacDonald and brother, James Dowling.
At this time, we would like to express our deep gratitude to the staff at Seaview Manor for the care and compassion they gave us during this journey.
Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Thursday, March 31 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the chapel on Friday, April 1 at 11 a.m., with Rev. Robert Lyle officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society or the Benevolent Fund of Bethel Presbyterian Church.
