Bernard Joseph ‘Bill’ Gillis, 87 of Sydney, passed away Friday, July 24, 2009, at home.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Dougald and Ella May (Gallant) Gillis. Bill was a resident of Sydney all of his life. He was employed with the Sydney steel plant for 40 years. He was also a life long member of St. Joseph’s parish and was active in the St. Joseph’s Men’s Club.
Bill was a veteran of the Second World War and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 12, Sydney. The chief enjoyed many happy summers in Big Pond.
He is survived by his son, Douglas; daughter, Anne (Ken) Power, both of Sydney; grandchildren, Katey and Colin Power and by companion, Theresa MacDonald, Sydney and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Peggy; brothers, Alfred, Douglas, Ernest; sisters, Mary and Kathleen.
There will be no visitation at the family’s request. A funeral mass will be held Wednesday, July 29, 2009 at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Church, Cabot Street, Sydney, with Fr. Gerald Dunphy officiating. Burial will take place in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Donations in Bernard’s memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to a charity of your choice.
