85, of Dartmouth, N.S., passed away on Friday, July 24, 2009, at the Abbie J. Lane Memorial Building in Halifax. Born in England on June 13, 1924, Kathleen was the daughter of Arthur and May (Davies) Heyden of Cheltenham, Gloucester. She proudly served in the Women’s Royal Navy Service during the Second World War. Kathleen and her family moved to Canada in 1957 and lived in Montreal and Halifax before retiring to Prince Edward Island and eventually Dartmouth. After raising her children, Kathleen returned to education as a mature student and was awarded a Bachelor of Arts focusing on social work from Loyola University in Montreal. She was an active volunteer in organizations like the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides of Canada and local hospitals, and a passionate believer in the power of education. Throughout her life, Kathleen sponsored a number of individuals and educational development projects around the world. Among her loves were travel, theatre, music, Jersey's Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, visiting family in England and spending holidays with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Kath enjoyed the New Glasgow Country Gardens at the Prince Edward Island Preserve Company and spent many happy hours sitting on the bench she had donated in the name of one of her best friends Jo. She is survived by daughter, Veronica White (Reg); son, Robert (Maureen); granddaughter, Alison; grandsons, Tony and David; and great-grandchildren, Eric, Victoria, Abby, Bailey, Cameron and Dexter. She was predeceased by her husband, Alfred W. (Bill); and her sister, Enid Smith. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 29, at 1 p.m. at A.L. Mattatall Funeral Home, 217 Portland Street, Dartmouth, N.S., with a reception to follow. Family flowers only. Donations to the charity of your choice.
