Peter Jennings McCarthy, formerly of Oakleigh Avenue, Halifax, passed away July 25, 2009, at Arborstone Enhanced Care.
Peter, born in Halifax on Dec. 2, 1928, was a son of the late Owen E. and Mary Agnes (Jennings) McCarthy.
On Aug. 29, 1951, Peter and Doris Read of Bear River were married and together they raised their seven children, Kathy (Charlie) Coleman, Sydney River, Mimi (Dave) MacLean, Bible Hill, Peter (Krista) McCarthy, Lower Sackville, Patty (Mark) Winfield, Bridgewater, Stephen, Owen (Kathy) McCarthy, Dartmouth, Dennis (Jennifer Millman) McCarthy, Truro. Peter is also survived by his beloved grandchildren, Dan McCarthy, Amy Coleman, Scott Coleman, Stephen Winfield, Andrew MacLean, Becky McCarthy, Claire MacLean, Emily Winfield, Bryden McCarthy, Liam McCarthy, Gregory McCarthy, Colleen McCarthy, Anna McCarthy; and his great-grandchild, Thomas Heans. Also surviving are brothers, Owen T. and Michael of Ontario.
Peter was predeceased by his wife, Doris (2005), son, Stephen (1980), sister, Eileen Murphy and brother, Dan McCarthy.
After completing his education in Halifax and briefly working at the Royal Bank, Peter joined TCA/Air Canada in 1951 as a passenger agent. In 1960 he was transferred to Sydney where he held sales and management positions until he returned to the Halifax airport where he continued as customer service manager and later Atlantic regional manager with Air Canada until his retirement in 1989.
Peter was a very hardworking and dedicated person who will be missed by family, friends and former colleagues.
The family will be honoured to receive visitors on Wednesday, July 29 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr., Halifax. Funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Agnes Church, Mumford Road on Thursday July 30, at 10 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, if you so wish, the family suggests a donation in Peter’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Society.
The family will be forever grateful to the wonderful staff of third floor Arborstone for the special care extended to our father during his stay.
