It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ella Mae Mac Lean on July 27, 2009, at Victoria Memorial Hospital, Baddeck.
Born January 8, 1919, she was a daughter of the late Florence (Taylor) and Daniel MacLean, Baddeck Inlet.
Her father died when Ella was 15 and she lived at home with her mother and brother to help with the family farm. She later worked at the Baddeck Co-op for 25 years, retiring in 1983.
She enjoyed baking, knitting, gardening and various crafts. She was interested in drawing and at age 78 began taking art lessons for several years from well known artist, Barrie Fraser. She travelled weekly, at first from Whycocomagh and later from Baddeck Inlet to Scotsville School of Crafts for art lessons.
She lived a quiet life, close to the earth. She loved animals, trees and flowers and enjoyed visitors and old friends coming to visit. She also enjoyed long conversations on the telephone to old friends, Jonena and Rachel.
Ella was predeceased by her brother, John Hughie in 1992. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She is survived by cousins, Myrna MacLeod and Marguerite Campbell with whom she resided for the past 17 years and also a cousin, John (Ruth Ann) MacLeod of Woodstock, Ont. She attended Knox Presbyterian Church and was a member of Knox A.M.S. and Ladies Aid. She was honoured with a life membership by the Atlantic Missionary Society.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to MacAskill Funeral Home and funeral will take place at Knox Presbyterian Church, Baddeck, on Friday, July 31st at 2 p.m. with Rev. Cameron Brett officiating.
