Johnson, Irene Lavenia - 82, Truro
With sadness in our hearts, we regret to announce the passing of Irene Johnson (nee MacQuarrie) on April 3, 2011 due to a motor vehicle accident. Irene was born in Westville, Pictou County on March 30, 1929 and was a daughter of the late William James and Elizabeth Irene (MacGregor) MacQuarrie. She attended the local schools and was a graduate of the 1951 class of the Aberdeen Hospital School of Nursing. Irene was married in Westville in 1951 to Charles Henry Johnson, an RCMP officer. She practiced as a nurse for a few years before settling down to raise a family. Irene lived in various locations throughout Nova Scotia, making Truro home for the last 46 years. Irene was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She is survived by her husband, Chuck along with their children, David Johnson, Halifax, Philip Johnson (Chris Lavers), London, Ont., Leslie (Robert) Thomas, Aurora, Ont., Mark (Brenda) Johnson, Regina, Sask., Michael (Heather), Brantford, Ont., and Andrew Johnson (Patricia Budicky), Antigonish; son-in-law, Ernie; 13 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Lorrayne MacQuarrie; nieces, Judy, Karen, Suzanne, Janice, Cindy; nephew, David. She will also be fondly remembered by the extended Johnson family in western Canada. She was predeceased by her daughter, Susan Leah Glinz; sister, Agnes Hicks (Bill Hicks); brother, James William “Billie” MacQuarrie. Irene was an active member of the community with a large social network. She was a dedicated member of the First United Church in Truro and enjoyed her time with Unit “E” of the UCW. She was a long time member of the Kinettes and the Golden K club. She was particularly proud of being an original stock holder in the Glen Breton Distillery. Above all, she enjoyed the company of her husband, family, and friends.
The past two years, Edinburgh House in Parklands Estate in Truro has been home. She enjoyed her time there and between fellow residents and staff, made many friends. The family wish to extend a special thank you to the staff of Parklands for their care and generosity throughout her stay and to the first responders and staff of the Aberdeen Hospital, Halifax Infirmary ICU for their compassionate care. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 6 from 6-8 pm in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow Street, Truro with a celebration of Irene’s life on Thursday, April 7 at 2 pm in First United Church, 711 Prince Street, Truro, officiated by Rev. Roger Moore and Rev. Larry Harrison. Reception to follow the service. Interment at a later date in Forest Glen Cemetery. Family flowers only. Donations can be made to the charity of your choice.
