Mary Etta French, 87, of South Bar, passed away Wednesday, July 29, 2009, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late John Neil and Mary Josephine (MacDonald) MacDonald.
Etta was a member of Holy Redeemer Church, Whitney Pier, and was a longtime resident of South Bar. She was a very quiet lady who loved helping her family in many ways and enjoyed many summers in Ingonish where she was only known to everyone there as ‘Nana’.
Etta is survived by daughters, Doreen French of MacAdams Lake, Imelda Burke of South Bar; sister, Cecilia Moore of Sydney; brothers, Greg (Betty) MacDonald of Delaware and Bernie (Katie) MacDonald of Sydney; grandchildren, Kimberly (Art) Wiersma of British Columbia, Karen (Pat) Galarneau, Kyla Kurke, both of Lower Sackville and Kerri Burke of Sydney. Etta is also survived by 12 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by brothers, Lawrence and Leo.
Visitation for Etta was held from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, July 30 and will be held today (Friday), July 31 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, 755 George St., Sydney, 539-3002. Funeral mass will be held Saturday, Aug. 1 at 2 p.m. in Holy Redeemer Church, Whitney Pier, with Fr. Errol MacDonald officiating. Burial will take place in St. Alphonsus Cemetery, South Bar.
