Mary Rose Bernard, 82, of 8989 Hwy. 105, Waycobah passed away on Wednesday, July 29, 2009, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a lengthy illness.
Born in North Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Margaret (Paul) Smith.
She was a member of Blessed Kateri Tekwitha parish, Waycobah. Rose was a devoted traveller to Saint Anne de Beaupré and also to Medjugorje.
Rose was known for the many quilts she designed and completed. She enjoyed her hobbies and especially the time spent with all her loving family.
Rose was employed during the Second World War at T.W. Curry Ltd. and worked as an extra in the movie Squanto.
She was the last surviving member of her family.
She is survived by four daughters, Mary Catherine (Benedict), Anne Isabel (Raymond), Janet and Madeline; six sons, Frank (Genevieve), Louis Joe (Alexandria), Gilbert, Charles, Robert (Kelly) and John Leonard (Darla), all of Waycobah and also by 34 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces; and nephews and daughter-in-law, Elizabeth.
Rose was predeceased by her loving husband, Charles Joseph ‘Soln’, three brothers, Jimmy, John, Sam, three sisters, Mary Flora, Christina, Rubena, two sons, Benjamin, John Noel, two grandchildren, Drew, Brayden and one great-granddaughter, Nicole.
Visitation for the late Rose Bernard will be at the family residence in Waycobah on Sunday, Aug. 2 after 7 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated in Blessed Kateri Tekwitha Church on Monday at 11 a.m. with Fr. Robert MacNeil officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
