McKINNON – On April 3, 2011, Gerald Douglas (Dick) McKinnon, of Swift Current, SK, passed away at the age of 82. A private family service was held at the chapel of Warren’s Funeral Home on April 7, 2011, at 11:00AM, with Shirley Wilson officiating. A come and go tea was held at 1:00PM at the Royal Canadian Legion Hall for family and friends to attend. The honorary pallbearers were the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #56 Honour Guard, as well as all that shared in his life. The interment service will be held at a later date. Dick is survived by his children: Kelly (Christine) McKinnon, Kate (Kim) Beadman, and Christine (Garry) Gerbrandt; his grandchildren: Robyn (Trent) Smith, Jon McKinnon, Mandy McKinnon (Marni), Kory Farrants (Dale), Kimberley (Nick) Giesbrecht, and Ryan Gerbrandt; his great granddaughter, Abby; his brother: Gord (Doreen) McKinnon; sister: Marilyn (Bob) Bertram; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Ione; his parents: Frank and Sophia McKinnon; his sister Phylis McKinnon at infancy, his sister Margaret Speers, and his brother Sydney McKinnon. Dick was born December 18, 1928, in Moose Jaw, SK, and received his education there. In his early years Dick played hockey for the Humboldt Broncos in the Saskatchewan Junior League. From there, he was drafted to the New York Rangers but did not accept the offer. Because of his outstanding hockey skills, his picture can still be found hanging on the wall at the Humboldt arena. Throughout the years he excelled at many sports including curling, baseball and in his later years, golf. On October 31, 1953, he married Ione Evelyn Heath, and from there was blessed with three children. Growing up in Moose Jaw Dick had many jobs, and in 1976, his career with Dairy Producers Cooperative led his family to Swift Current where he worked as a milk truck driver until his retirement in the late 80s. In his later years he could be found at the Chinook Golf Course driving the Marshall cart, or on the course playing a round of golf with his friends. He was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #56, and could be found there on a regular basis playing darts and cards with the many friends he made there. Because he was an avid traveler, he was fortunate enough to have made many friends coast to coast. Dick will be remembered for his sense of humour, his warm personality, and his genuine heart. In Dick’s honour, memorial donations can be made to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #56. Funeral arrangements were in care of Warren’s Funeral Home in Swift Current, SK.
